I awoke this Christmas Eve morning to snow. A lot of snow. At this point, it has been snowing all day long, and I will declare that we are on the verge of one of the very few, if not the only, white Christmas of my life. It’s true. Even living in regions where snow does fall during the winter, albeit not in massive amounts, it almost never snows on Christmas.

Why does anyone care if it snows on Christmas? Well, like my mom always says, it’s nice to enjoy the snowfall when you don’t have to worry about getting anywhere in particular. I believe that, but, in reality, it’s not like people don’t need to get somewhere on Christmas. Case in point, the havoc in the UK because of the weather-related travel chaos.

I think there is a nostalgia that comes from the Irving Berlin song and the 1940s movie of the same name. I don’t know if the song was around before the movie. It would be interesting to know if people dreamed of a white Christmas before the song. Or before the movie. The movie is just awful. I’ve always loved old movies and movie musicals. I know they are hokey, but some are fun, with famous movie moments that are worth watching. As hokey as they may be, there are many I would love to find on TV right now. White Christmas (or is it Holiday Inn?) though, the only thing going for that movie is the finale when Bing Crosby sings the song. I couldn’t sit through it again. That says a lot if you knew how many times I watch movies over and over and over again.

If you are looking for a great movie musical to watch this Christmas while you’re snowed in, I suggest Meet Me in St. Louis. Maybe not traditionally considered a ‘Christmas movie,’ but when Judy Garlands sings “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” it evokes as much nostalgia as Jimmy Stewart running through Bedford Falls. I told you I love old movies.
